Finally, it’s out.

We are aware na mahilig magtake ng risks si Lady Gaga through her music. Lalo na sa kantang ito, nirelease ang single during Maundy Thursday, the day when Judas betrayed Jesus. The creative risks and repercussions were expected pero no one can stop Lady Gaga who portrays Mary Magdalene on the video.

Naalala ko bigla. Dahil wala akong internet connection during Holy Week, nanuod na lang ako ng tv and as usual ang mga palabas was all about Holy Week. And then I came across a documentary about Judas, the famous apostle who betrayed Jesus Christ (I forgot kung saang channel yun). Yung iba ay nagsabi na he even doesn’t exist and Judas was only a representation of betrayal. Meron ding speculation na he did it on Jesus’ purpose (in short, pakana ni Hesukristo like what he asked from Peter). Lalo na nung lumutang yung issue about Gospel of Judas, one of the gnostic gospels.

“‘Judas’ is a metaphor and an analogy about forgiveness and betrayal and things that haunt you in your life and how I believe that it’s the darkness in your life that ultimately shines and illuminates the greater light that you have upon you. Someone once said to me, ‘If you have no shadows then you’re not standing in the light.‘ So the song is about washing the feet of both good and evil and understanding and forgiving the demons from your past in order to move into the greatness of your future. I just like really aggressive metaphors—harder, thicker, darker—and my fans do as well. So it is a very challenging and aggressive metaphor, but it is a metaphor. ~Lady Gaga

Enough explanation, I must say.

Honestly, it took me a day before I can fully appreciate the music video. I initially loved the song (at ginawan ko pa nga ng spoof song haha!) and craved for the music video before it is released. Was is just me or matagal kasi magbuffer yung video kaya di ko gaano madigest yung concept?

The concept is about Modern Jerusalem. The main characters played the significant people from the Bible but with a twist and relevant sa modern times at sa kanta mismo. Who would have ever thought na yung apostles and Jesus himself will be like big bikers? And guess what, familiar sa akin yung gumanap na Judas. It’s Norman Reedus from “The Walking Dead” (siya yung siga na kapatid nung inawang nakaposas sa rooftop ng building; yung gumagamit ng pana).

Overall, maganda yung video just like the song itself and I didn’t expect the result talaga. Kahit hindi nagsink-in kaagad yung concept sa akin, I applaud the video for taking its risks. Two opposing ideas (big bikes and bible) came into one artistic approach. Dyan ako bilib kay Lady Gaga. I’m sure marami ang aangal dito pero ang advice ko is don’t take it too literal. Maganda naman yung message (not that I’m speaking as Lady Gaga fan ah).

Below are some screenshots (kung ayaw niyo panuorin yung video sa baba):

“Jesus is my virtue… and Judas is the demon I cling to… I CLING TO!” (Nice lyrics)

Hot Like Mexico, rejoice!

I kind of find this video totally random. I can’t wrap my head around the concept of “Judas” as a metaphor for forgiveness and betrayal, well least not in this video. Still, its a whole lot of eye candy and not much story telling for a music video.
