The Missing Alice, behind the scenes

Sa wakas, pwede ko na i-post ito. Nabigyan na ako ng go-signal.

Last July 31, a month ago, naging bahagi ako ng napakasaya at napakaglamorosong fashion pictorial ng aking bagong friend na si April Japzon. Ito ay kanyang Finals project para sa kanyang Styling class under veteran supermodel Ms. Marina Benipayo (correct if I’m wrong, April) since nag-aaral siya sa School of Fashion and Arts.

I was in cloud 9.

Pwede kong ilabas after ng project presentation niya.

Kung nasanay ako bilang isang photographer, this time isa ako sa kukuhanan.

Kumpletong-kumpleto. May ilaw pa.

Take note: designer clothes. THE Mama Renee Salud, Veejay Floresca (of the finalists of Project Runway Philippines, season 1. Mahirap makulong. Joke.

Si Miel habang kinukuhanan ng picture ni Master Raecen Dimacali (both of them are my schoolmates). Parehong bilib ako sa kanila. Magaling magmodel at magproject si Miel. Top Model material. Si Raecen naman magaling kumuha ng litrato. Top Photographer material. Ako?

Ako at si Miel habang nagpapahinga. In fairness ang ganda ng lip color niya. Anong name? Chicken Curry Yellow? Sino manufacturer? Lucky Me Supreme La Paz Batchoy. Di lang makintab, may lasa pa.

Accesories courtesy of Mickey See. Yes, see the accessories by Mickey See. Wow, it rhymes. Andaya, bakit wala akong accessories? Joke.

Shoot was done at Dancing Machine Philippines Studio near Uniwide Parañaque. Baka mamaya gumalaw.

Blocking (positioning and testing kung maganda ang itsura sa picture) by Raecen with Jasmine (seating, left) and Rubie (standing, right). Or baka may nakita silang ipis.

It was Rubie’s time to shine. Galing ah.

Yung totoo, evacuee?

Astig tong coat-of-arms/insignia/whatever-you-may-call-it. Reminds me of Bench.

May craters eh. (Nilait ang sarili.) Pero ang galing. Nawala ang mga marka. Hindi na ako mukhang buwan. Mukha na akong Jupiter. Salamat Muriel, RN.

Ewan ko ba kung dahil ipinanganak ako sa Year of the Rabbit o mukha akong kuneho.

And by the way, nais ko pong pasalamatan si ginoong Mech Serva sa brown boots na aking sinuot. Sarap mag boots. Salamat, Mech. I love you pare. Haha.

Joke. Ito ang shot ng model with the stylist para sa layout ng project. Syempre, di magpapatalo si soon-to-be Liz Uy. (Uy April, kunin mo akong Vince Uy ah.

At teka. Ethan, pose ba yan o makati ba pwet mo?

My anak, Lei, and Miel. Hands down to Lei’s support.

Si April at Raecen with his totem-face expression.

Meet the EaPril loveteam.

Too bad wala akong picture habang kinukuhanan ako.

Here’s the link of the photos! ^_^

Origin of Symmetry exhibit

Despite my busy schedule, I try my best to relax and unwind.

Last July 20, I went to The Origin of Symmetry solo art exhibit by Mr Wesley Valenzuela at Art Informal in Greenhills, San Juan. I hadn’t met him personally and I barely knew him except he was one of the artists of most controversial Kulo exhibit (remember Mideo Cruz?). Kaya it would be my opportunity to meet him in person.

Tinapos ko muna yung trabaho ko and then I left the office at around 5:30 PM. Hindi ako sumakay ng MRT dahil natatakot ako sa rush hour (tipong siksikan at tulakan) so I just took a bus ride. Syempre, aircon bus.

I decided to stroll around the mall hanggang sa nakita ko si Art, one of ABMA sophomore student/friend.

Actually, it was my first time to go to Greenhills area. The entire neighborhood of Greenhills is posh. Nahiya ang kutis ko. I was talking to JC while he was giving me the direction and finally I found Art Informal. Para siyang typical na bahay until you enter the house/gallery.

And then I saw familiar faces of some ABMA 100 students. Pumunta ako sa kanila kaagad and then told my struggle while getting there. Finally, I was able to see and meet Sir Wesley in person. Hindi ko kasi siya naging professor pero I can tell he is a great teacher as well as an artist.

Finally, meeting my ABMA100 friends.

Inch and I were too shy at first pero kinapalan na namin ang mukha namin. Mabait naman si Sir Lourd.

Finally, Me and the Lourd!

There were dogs walking inside the gallery. Para sa akin, hindi sila aso. Grabe, parang mga kapre version ng dogs. Nakakatakot (since I’m scared of dogs due to past traumatic experience) pero I tried to have a picture with one. Mabait naman.

Of course, I had to check the art pieces. Kaya nga ako pumunta eh, aside from supposedly free food which was unfortunately wala na. Joke.

His artworks spoke about the union between different elements and creating balance or, as the exhibit name suggests, symmetry. For example, there were figurine of seemed-to-be Buddha with the head of Darth Vader and even the exhibit setup itself: distinctive and dynamic obras against the calm all-white gallery walls.

I want some of these figurines! Astig!

Sir Wesley with his students (I was the one who took this shot).

Kulitan as usual. Ang asim ng ngiti ni JC :D .

Can you spot the original Asian?

We were making fun of Dex’s tattered shirt aka the spider’s web shirt.

With Sir Kirby Roxas, also one of APC professors.

Finally, a picture with them. Mukha akong prof.

And since most of them needed to go home (mga bata nga naman), we left the place at around 9 or 10. Nilakad namin ang buong Greenhills (again, manghang-mangha ako na parang promdi) and had an initial plan before going home. Pero hindi natuloy dahil most of the shops were closed na. Naiwang mga bukas na lang ay mamahalin.

Most of them already decided to leave so ang naiwan ay ako, Inch, and Dex. I was urging them para kumain dahil hindi ako kumain before going to the exhibit.

And oh! I almost forgot! While all of us were still at Greenhills sidewalk and deciding who were going home or not, a man in his 30s approached us and begged for help since ‘her mother’ was stabbed to death and needs monetary assistance. He even told us that it was reported in the news. Guess what, it was a modus operandi.

EDSA Magallanes street art

Who among you happens to pass by EDSA Magallanes sounthbound lane? I’m sure you’ll be familiar at what I’m gonna talk about. Yung traffic? Given na yun, ‘no ba kayo :D .

A month ago, I read a Facebook post from Robbie (aka The Creative Dork) about the huge wall art in EDSA Magallanes. Nacurious ako so I checked it by myself. Una kong napansin nung papunt ako for Tuklas Sining sa Reposo event. But sad to say, I was on the wrong side of the road.

Then I only got to see the entire wall during one of my early trips to home. I favor this over the previous MMDA Metro Art which were very generic :P . Hindi ko makuhanan ng buo dahil 1) saglit lang huminto ang bus na sinasakyan ko; and 2) my camera doesn’t have wide-angle lens.

First portion I took a shot. It reminds me of sea creatures. I can see shells, giant squid, an octopus, and planktons. At huwag kayo… si kuya, nakashades kahit ora de peligro na (Ora de peligro is a term mostly used by videographers/photographers which pertaining to the time period when the sun is setting/ malapit na dumilim, probably 5 PM onwards. now you know.) :D .

Parang repolyo. This is like a salad art on the wall. I wonder if this is good for vegetarian/vegan’s eyes :D .

Parang mga microbes na magnified under a microscope.

I found out that this is one of the major steps for MMDA and Boysen’s  year-long environmental project along EDSA. Some points along Highway 54 (former name of EDSA. Naks, Kuya Kim, is that you?) will be filled with large-scale paintings by noted artists. It started last May 7 at Barangay San Lorenzo – Mantrade portion by Jose Tence Ruiz and we will be seeing other grand paintings on certain EDSA portions on the next months.

Not only for art sake but also this project is also for the environment. Paints are Boysen Knoxout paint which helps transform airborne toxins into safe residue when washed away by rains. This reduces the air pollution in EDSA caused mostly by transportation and  industry smoke emissions. For more information about the paint, click here. (Endorsement ba ito? PAK!)

Boysen's KNOxOUT purifies the air by breaking down toxic emissions into nontoxic substances. Photo courtesy of http://www.talktalktilaok.com

There are 3 things I’m worried about it:

Will it stop the illegal vandalisms along EDSA public walls? I’m fed up of smelling Eau de Uric acid everytime I travel at work. Joke :D . Or does the paint also act as wee-wee neutralizer? If that will be the case, mas bibilib ako sa Boysen :) .

Does it have a long-term advantage to our environment particularly on EDSA? If it’s long, how long?

I’m sure pag nakumpleto ang paintings (or even while the paintings are being done), mapapahinto ang mga sasakyan para pagmasdan ang mga gawa sa EDSA. Will it generate the same reaction just like when you see those recent Bench billboards along Guadalupe bridge? :D

Tuklas Sining Sa Reposo

Last May 28, I joined with some School of Multimedia Arts of Asia Pacific College students/Bahay Bombilya (its org) under Sir Paolo Paredes (adviser) at Tuklas Sining sa Reposo event in Bel-Air, Makati City. The event was organized by the City of Makati Government as well as LRI Design Plaza (a very familiar for APC students kasi madalas dun ginaganap yung art exhibits), National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and SM Development Corporation.

Tuklas Sining sa Reposo is an annual arts-music-culture festival formed by Grupo Reposo to showcase the flourishing Pinoy talent and creativity, making the Reposo/Nicanor Garcia Street as its venue.

Nakita ko yung invitation through Kai Siquian, one of the students. I was intrigued that I asked kung pwede ang alumni and fortunately pwede pala. The group had a meeting but I was unable to attend so I asked for the details. I just went to the location as soon as I learned the details. It so happened that I know the place because 1) alam ko yung LRI Plaza, 2) it’s near the office that I was going to apply for/where I am working right now. Nakarating ako mga around 11 AM and the weather was kinda bad so there were tents setup on the street. Kahit maulan, natuloy pa rin yung event.

Here are some of the photos during that day:

I caught a glimpse of talk-of the-town street wall painting across EDSA Magallanes/Mantrade. Too bad nasa wrong side ako kaya I wasn’t able to take a full photo. :D )

The main venue of Tuklas Sining sa Reposo; in front of LRI Plaza kung saan madalas mag-exhibit ang APC SoMA students, so I’m familiar with the place. The traffic alternate route was made behind LRI since the event occupied the street (see the red signs). At syempre… may media sponsors… kaya panay ngiti namin sa camera. Joke :D .

Event tarp :)

SMDC is one of the sponsors of the event and Anne Curtis is the brand ambassador. Sad to say, I didn’t see Anne Curtis that day :(

APC SoMA students/Bahay Bombilya started the graffiti with stenciling. Promise, medyo stressful kasi mahirap i-tantsa yung traces. Plus, a slight movement on the projection could kill the pattern entriely (which it really happened). Then after stenciling, we painted the patterns/spaces according to color coding. Para kaming nagkukulay ng malaking coloring book :)

The weapons of choice, sponsored by the event. So he placed some of the items in the bag, and nakita namin yung isang spray bottle.

By the way, anlalim ng word na ‘maanggian’ ah :D .

The design proposal, with codes. Please let me know who conceptualized this :) .

Paints by Boysen and Davies’ Sun and Rain. Sakto yung Sun and Rain, nagamit namin during rain :D .

Hindi ko makakalimutan ito. I made my first stupid accident that day. As soon as I arrived, I volunteered to fix and move the things closer to our tent since it started to rain hard. Nagligpit ako ng mga kalat… then it turned out na nagkalat pa lalo ako haha! I accidentally knocked off a paint bucket. Grabe talaga as in nagpanic ako then napahiya :D . Pero the show must go on kaya niligpit ko naman. Good thing acrylic yung paint kundi baka mapilitan akong gawing newly painted basketball court yung isang part ng Reposo street :D

Jen and Jam while perfecting the colors. This was challenging kasi iba iba tayo ng perception sa hues. Saklap kung color-blinded ka. Pero mas masaklap kung bulag ka. PAK :D

Sir Pao with the heavy duty blow gun. Nope, not a hair blower substitute. Baka masunog pa ang buhok mo :D . Since we were having hard time how to speed up the painting pace because of the bad weather, our team used this to make the paint dry.

Some Bahay Bombilya peeps working on the topmost part of the wall.

By around 7, nagpapanic na kami kasi we were not yet done eh malapit na matapos yung program nearby. The festival also had stageplays, dances, and music performances. May point na halos kinakanta eh old songs (mga 50 to 80s) kaya inaasar ako na kapanahunan ko raw yun. Excuse me, 90s ako, joke :D We also spotted Noel Cabangon who performed really great and Mr. John Santos who did a comic skit of Miss Armida Siguion Reyna.

UP Singing Ambassadors from a distance. Kumanta rin sila ng mga magagandang songs. Sana kumanta sila ng Lady Gaga songs. Hehe.

Pero as soon as we finished it, we couldn’t ourselves being marveled by the output.

A touch of Bahay Bombilya’s signature :) .

And I tried promoting my blog, nandun na rin eh kaya di ko pinalampas :) .

Our Jazz-inspired art wall for SMDC. Done at 9 PM. Ganda no? Sorry, not for sale :) .

You can check photos from Bridge Events here.

Thank you again to Bahay Bombilya officers and members, to Nino Reantaso (Bahay Bombilya President),and to Sir Pao Paredes. At least na-enjoy ko ang last weeks of summer vacation ko and kahit graduate na ako, I was still invited to join. I feel honored to be part of this promising and cool project. We deserve to have our potential be recognized outside school. Sana next time may mga susunod na ganitong mga events kasi super saya and I had chance to meet new people….. alanganing new animals, di ba? Kudos!

Hot like Mexico, rejoice!
